'Girl + Turtles', the third cd by Gore Slut
'Life can often be captured into formulas.'

Gore Slut will play twice at Pukkelpop next weekend. Bass player Jacki Billet ‘If it isn’t good the first day, people will have a reason to come back the next day.’ Or quite the opposite, of course. But even then, they can always turn to Girl + Turtles, the recently released third cd of the Antwerp band, with singer-guitarist Rudy Trouvé (ex-dEUS) as frontman.

Rudy Trouvé sometimes doesn’t make things easy for his listeners. On the last album of the (now deceased) band Kiss My Jazz, was a mini-cd hidden before the first track. To get access to that, you’d have to rewind the album from the beginning. The previous cd of Gore Slut also had hidden music on it. Those who try out the same thing with Girl + Turtles, will discover another ghosttrack, a faster version of ‘Stop’, a song which is also on the cd as a ‘normal’ track. Funny: the two other band members don’t know what I’m talking about. Billet about my remark: “’Stop’ two times, I was thinking ‘what’s wrong with this guy?’, but the problem lies with us. I should also start looking on those previous records.” (laughs)
Just like on the first two cds, the Antwerp quartet offers all sorts of guitar music on Girl + Turtles, ranging from soft and touching (‘Anyway’) over manic (‘moon’, ‘Stop’) to punky (‘Freak’). It remains remarkable that the voice of Rudy Trouvé is often mixed into the background, although he’s a lot more understandable on Girl + Turtles compared to the two previous Gore Slut albums. “I don’t care too much for voices which sound dominant over the music. Sometimes it can work, but in popmusic, I often think the vocals sound too loud compared to the instruments. On the new album, my voice is less modified than before. The consequence is I feel less comfortable about that. I prefer hearing myself more deformed than natural.”
Too little confidence as a singer? “No, not exactly. When the voice is deformed, it seems as if it’s another singer singing, and that way it is easier for me to judge whether I like it or not. I tend to write about hyper-personal subjects, the lyrics are often pieces from my diary. I think that’s okay, I just don’t always dare to sing them too clearly. I know that’s a contradiction, but sometimes it just feels a little embarrassing, as if you’re hanging out your own dirty laundry.”
Billet: “I think it’s oké you can’t understand certain sentences. Because you can always pick up something, and then you can give your own meaning to it.”
Trouvé: “Something that hits you, can always be expressed within a mathematic formula, I think. In bands where I only play the guitar, I often play according to a certain mathematic pattern. And still you get an emotional or certain atmosphere. Life can often be captured into formulas, even love.”

The cd contains both ‘Crawling to target 1’ as ‘Crawling to target 2’. What’s the connection? Trouvé: “There’s a link in the text of them, both contain the sentence ‘Crawling to target’, and they are both about loss. But other than that, they are completely different songs. Originally it was our intention to name the record ‘Crawling to target’, and all the songs on it ‘Crawling to target’, followed by a number. But we were afraid we’d be too stupid to not mix up all the songs on our setlists.”
Rudy Trouvé had said after the second album that the next one would be a lot more acoustic. “That was our original intention, but we didn’t get to it. We have tried to capture a sound which reminds of the end of the seventies, like Wire or Joy Division.” We didn’t discover that last band in the songs of Girl + Turtles. “Mm, of two songs, ‘Moon’ and ‘A Harsh Word’, the way of drumming is influenced by Joy Division.” In the bands in which Rudy Trouvé has the leading role (Gore Slut, Lionell Horrowitz and his Combo, and Kiss my Jazz in the old days), Rudy Trouvé often writes songs in the spirit of an other band, which doesn’t imply the result sounds just like the influencing song. That’s why it’s interesting to hear afterwards which the influences were exactly. “’Coming Close again’ is inspired by The Feelies, while with ‘Imitation’, we were thinking about Wire in the days of ‘Mannequin’.” And ‘Moon’ isn’t only inspired by Joy Division, but also by Televisions ‘Marquee Moon’. “The working title was ‘Television Moon’, but we thought that would be pushing it a bit.” So ‘Turtles’ is a reference to The Turtles (famous of ‘Happy Together’)? “No, we planned on doing something à la Smog, but in the end it turned out to also be very much Gore Slut. Like it usually happens. We aren’t always very good musicians, so we use records as reference points. Other bands would say: ‘This is a song in C.’ With us in the rehearsal room, you hear: ‘It should sound like The gang of Four in the days of ‘Entertainment’.” Is it possible for everyone to always understand those references? Billet: “It doesn’t matter, I can’t follow in several fields, but in the end we can sort things out.” Trouvé: “The alternative would be: ‘It should sound like a quite river, above which hangs a slightly stormy cloud, with a lightening coming out of it once in a while.’ That seems more unclear to me.”
We are more than happy to refer to Deadbeattown for those who want to find out more about Rudy Trouvé. It is a website fully dedicated to him, but other than that, Rudy himself has nothing to do with it. “That site is sometimes so well informed, it mentions things we know nothing about.”
Rudy’s ‘Great Ideas’ is what it says on the frontpage. Fun, or a little bit frightening?
”To be honest, I think it’s flattering, really. But when Heavenhotel was in a bad situation a while back, I tried to keep that within those concerned. But one week later it was still on the website, and that was a bit freaky.

A Virgin in a brothel
When a couple of Antwerp friends moved into an old brothel in the Rotterdamstraat abou ten years ago, they called the place Heavenhotel. It also became the name for the organization which holds several artistic activities. Heavenhotel used to release cds of (among others) Kiss My Jazz and Dead Man Ray, in all independence.
But since about a year, the organization found shelter with the Belgian departement of the record multinational Virgin.
Ironically enough, such a deal was necessary because the success of Dead Man Ray had outgrown Heavenhotel. Trouvé: "By making a few unwise decisions, we were financially in serious trouble. The deal now consists of us making a record and paying for it ourselves, but the moment it is finished we hand it out to Virgin, after which we immediately receive our money."
How much does a cd of Gore Slut cost for instance. Billet replies "somewhere between 700 and 750 franks". Trouvé: "My estimation is about 180.000 bef, although we used to make cds for 50.000 franks." Figures which are, even by Belgian standards, peanuts.
For the moment, Dead Man Ray is directly under a contract at Virgin. While you could assume: Dead Man Ray is the only band of Heavenhotel which does really well, and thus it could financially support the other bands. Trouvé: "In the first place, Dead Man Ray has the ambition to get somewhere, something it doesn't share with Heavenhotel." Billet: "We think each project should be completely separate from each other. Because Dead Man Ray could mean a whole lot more work for us, as a vzw (organization with no profit goals)." Trouvé: "In other words, the other bands wouldn't benefit from it."

'Girl + Turtles', de derde cd van Gore Slut
'Leven is vaak te herleiden tot formules.'

Gore Slut speelt komend weekend tweemaal op Pukkelpop. Bassist Jacki Billet ‘Als het de eerste dag niet goed is, hebben de mensen een tweede reden om terug te komen.’ Of net niet, natuurlijk. Maar dan kunnen ze nog altijd hun toevlucht zoeken tot Girl + Turtles, de pas verschenen derde cd van de Antwerpse formatie, met als uithangbord zanger-gitarist Rudy Trouvé (ex-dEUS)
Rudy Trouvé maakt het de luisteraar soms niet makkelijk. Op de laatste langspeler van zijn ondertussen opgedoekte groep Kiss My Jazz stond een mini-cd verstopt voor het eerste nummer. Om die te beluisteren, moest je vanaf het begin van de plaat terugspoelen. Ook op de vorige cd van Gore Slut stond verborgen muziek. Wie de handeling uitvoert bij Girl + Turtles ontdekt opnieuw een ghosttrack, met name een snellere versie van ‘Stop’, een liedje dat ook ‘gewoon’ op de cd staat. Grappig: de twee andere bandleden weten nergens van. Billet over mijn opmerking: “Twee keer ‘Stop’, ik dacht wat is er mis met die mens, maar het probleem ligt bij ons. Ik moet op die vorige platen ook eens gaan zoeken.” (lacht)
Zoals op de eerste twee cds biedt het Antwerpse kwartet op Girl+Turtles allerhande gitaarmuziek, van zacht en ontroerend (‘Anyway’) over manisch (‘moon’, ‘Stop’) tot punky (‘Freak’). Het blijft opvallend dat de stem van Rudy Trouvé geregeld naar achteren is gemixt, al valt hij op Girl + Turtles al heel wat beter te verstaan dan op de twee vorige Gore Slut-cd’s. “Ik hou niet erg van een stem die prominent klinkt. Dat marcheert soms wel, maar ik vind in popmuziek de zang toch vaak te luid klinken in vergelijking met de instrumentatie. Op de nieuwe plaat is mijn stem minder bewerkt met effecten dan vroeger. Met als gevolg dat ik me minder comfortabel voel. Ik hoor mezelf graag wat meer vervormd dan naturel.”
Te weinig zelfvertrouwen als zanger? “Toch niet. Als de stem bewerkt is, dan lijkt het alsof het een andere zanger is die zingt en zo kan ik makkelijker oordelen of ik het goed vindt of niet. Ik heb de neiging om over hyperpersoonlijke zaken te schrijven, de teksten zijn vaak flarden uit mijn dagboek. Ik vind dat dat moet kunnen, alleen durf ik die niet altijd even duidelijk te zingen. Ik weet dat het tegenstrijdig is, maar soms vind ik het een beetje gênant, het is alsof je je vuile was buiten hangt.”
Billet: “Ik vind het wel oké dat je sommige zinnen niet kunt verstaan. Want je pikt toch altijd wel iets op en dan kun je er zelf een betekenis aan geven.”
Trouvé: “Iets wat je raakt, is volgens mij altijd uit te drukken in een wiskundige formule. In groepen waar ik alleen maar gitaar speel, ga ik als gitarist vaak te werk volgens een wiskundig patroon. En toch krijg je een emotionele of bepaalde sfeer. Het leven is vaak te herleiden tot formules, zelfs liefde.”

De cd bevat zowel ‘Crawling to target 1’ als ‘Crawling to target 2’. Wat is het verband? Trouvé: “Tekstueel is er een link, in beide komt de zin ‘Crawling to target’ voor en ze handelen allebei over verlies. Maar verder zijn het totaal andere songs. Het was aanvankelijk de bedoeling de plaat ‘Crawling to target’ te noemen en alle songs ‘Crawling to target’ gevolgd door een getal. Maar we waren bang dat we zelf te loemp zouden zijn om op de setlist door te hebben over welke song het dan zou gaan.”
Rudy Trouvé had na de tweede cd gezegd dat de komende een stuk akoestischer zou zijn. “Dat waren we van plan, maar het is er niet van gekomen. We hebben geprobeerd een klank te bereiken die herinnert aan het einde van de jaren zeventig, zoals Wire of Joy Division.” Die laatste groep hadden we niet ontdekt in de songs van Girl + Turtles. “Mm, van twee songs, ‘Moon’ en ‘A Harsh Word’, is de manier van drummen beïnvloed door Joy Division.” Met de groepen waarin hij de kar trekt (Gore Slut, Lionell Horrowitz and his Combo, vroeger Kiss my Jazz) schrijft Rudy Trouvé wel vaker nummers in de geest van een andere band, wat niet betekent dat het eindresultaat klinkt als het voorbeeld. Daarom is het interessant om achteraf te horen wat de invloeden zijn geweest. “’Coming Close again’ is door de Feelies beïnvloed, terwijl we bij ‘Imitation’ aan Wire ten tijde van ‘Mannequin’ dachten.” En ‘Moon’ is niet alleen geïnspireerd door Joy Division, maar ook door Televisions ‘Marquee Moon’. “De werktitel was ‘Television Moon’, maar dat vonden we net iets te vergaand.” Dus ‘Turtles’ is een verwijzing naar The Turtles (bekend van ‘Happy Together’)? “Neen, het was het plan iets à la Smog te verzinnen, maar uiteindelijk is het toch ook Gore Slut geworden. Zoals dat meestal gebeurt. Wij zijn niet altijd zo’n goeie muzikanten, waardoor we altijd platen als referentiepunt gebruiken. Andere groepen zouden zeggen: ‘Dit is een song in C.’ Bij ons hoor je in het repetitielokaal: ‘Het moet klinken als The gang of Four ten tijde van ‘Entertainment’.” Kan iedereen dan altijd volgen? Billet: “Dat speelt geen rol, ik kan op verscheidene vlakken niet volgen, maar uiteindelijk komt het toch altijd goed.” Trouvé: “Het alternatief is zeggen: ‘Het moet klinken als een kabbelend beekje waarboven een lichte onweerswolk drijft, waaruit af en toe de bliksem flitst.’ Dat lijkt me toch onduidelijker.”
Wie meer over Rudy Trouvé te weten wil komen, verwijzen we met plezier naar Deadbeattown, een website die helemaal aan hem is gewijd, maar waar hij voorts niets te maken heeft. “Die site is soms zo goed geïnformeerd dat er zelfs zaken op staan waar wij geen weet van hebben.”
Rudy’s ‘Great Ideas’ prijkt er op de openingspagina. Leuk of een beetje beangstigend? “Eerlijk gezegd vind ik het wel flatterend. Maar toen Heavenhotel er erg slecht voorstond, heb ik geprobeerd dat binnenskamers te houden, maar een week later stond het toch op de website. Dat is wel een beetje flippen.

Een maagd in een hoerenkast
Toen een stel Antwerpse vrienden zo'n jaar of tien geleden een voormalige hoerenkast in de Rotterdamstraat betrokken, doopten ze de plek Heavenhotel.
Dat werd ook de naam van de organisatie die die de artistieke activiteiten overkoepelde. Heavenhotel bracht aanvankelijk in alle onafhankelijkheid de cd's uit van onder meer Kiss My Jazz en Dead Man Ray. Maar sinds een jaar heeft de organisatie onderdak gevonden bij de Belgische afdeling van de platenmultinational Virgin. Ironisch genoeg was zo'n deal nodig, omdat het succes van Heavenhotel boven het hoofd was gegroeid. Trouvé: "Door enkele onverstandige beslissingen zaten we financieel in de penarie. De deal is nu dat wij een plaat zelf betalen en maken, maar zodra ze af is, geven we ze aan Virgin, waarna we meteen ons geld krijgen." Hoeveel kost bijvoorbeeld een cd van Gore Slut. Billet droogjes: "Tussen de 700 en 750 frank." Trouvé: "Ik schat zo'n 180.000 frank, al hebben we vroeger cd's gemaakt voor 50.000." Bedragen die zelfs naar Belgische standaards behoorlijk peanuts zijn.
Dead Man Ray ligt momenteel rechtstreeks onder contract bij Virgin. Terwijl je zou kunnen stellen: het is de enige groep van Heavenhotel die goed boert, en dus zou ze financieel de andere groepen kunnen steunen. Trouvé: "In de eerste plaats heeft de band Dead Man Ray behoorlijk wat ambitie om het ver te schoppen, wat niet geldt voor Heavenhotel." Billet: "Wij vinden dat elk project zelfbedruipend moet zijn. Want Dead Man Ray zou voor ons als vzw voor veel meer werk zorgen." Trouvé: "Dat zou dus ten koste van de andere bands gaan."
