Daan solo is best described as a more purified version of Dead man ray. Less emphasis on guitars, more emphasis on melody, and more poppy themed songs.
50% and especially Boots are fantastic singles, perfectly suited for a life as radio hits.
Ashtray (the track Rudy plays the feedback guitar on) is a moody down-beat track which has its roots in country music. Convertible chaos is a lovely, upbeat experiment with lots of Sherman filterbank effects thrown in, making for a weird 4 minute trip through what Daan’s mind must look like.
This is Daan’s solo album, but the way of working is quite the same as the way Dead man ray makes their music. Profools also features cut-up structures, but the (instrumental) basis has less improvisations, a more clear sound, and more use of the Sherman filterbank.
Daan’s lyrics remain as improvised as we’ve gotten used to from Dead man ray. I especially like the lyrics in Birds: "I load my gun- point at bird- bird falls down".
...Oh well- I guess it’s the way he sings it! :)
It’s a great album of course- If you like Dead man ray, chances are you’ll like this too.
